STORY

This is a journey from one person to a collective,
where individuals come together to form a community.

The origins of the World Jaw Harp Music Festival trace back to founder Hong-Hong (Lin Hong-Ying) and her travels in 2017.

While backpacking through Europe, she stumbled upon a fascinating instrument. The first pluck sounded amusing, but just a second later, she often says, "My life could no longer part from that sound." This ancient instrument, rich in culture and philosophy, was fading into obscurity across the world.

Falling in love with the jaw harp and finding it hard to access learning resources locally, she decided to quit her job  to search for jaw harps in Taiwan and across Eurasia. She began sharing stories and music wherever she went, hoping to introduce more people to the instrument.

Over the years, she accumulated over 200 lectures, workshops, and performances, bringing the jaw harp to festivals like the Dadaocheng International Arts Festival (2020), Kuandu Arts Festival (2021), Spring Wave Music Festival (2022), and international stages such as the Ozora Festival (2019) and Ancient Trance Festival (2023).

This is a journey from one person to many—a transformation from initially finding little information or a community in Taiwan to now building a community of thousands. Regular events like the "Nature Sound Improvised Concert" and "Jaw Harp Gatherings" have fostered creativity and collaboration, growing the base of jaw harp enthusiasts.

In 2022, fueled by a long-standing dream, the founder rallied six partners to host Taiwan's first-ever World Jaw Harp Music Festival. The goal was to unite Taiwan's scattered jaw harp elders, artists, and enthusiasts, while inviting international jaw harp musicians to showcase the instrument's diverse styles and possibilities.

Supported by the Father Yves Liu Cultural and Arts Foundation and with full self-funding, the six partners poured their passion into making the inaugural World Jaw Harp Music Festival a reality, attracting over a thousand attendees.

The festival featured not only workshops, talks, exhibitions, and markets but also musicians from Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, and Vietnam. Indigenous masters from the Seediq, Atayal, Truku, Amis, Puyuma, and Paiwan tribes shared their own jaw harp stories and sounds. The festival's friendly design, creative games, and immersive experiences combining nature and sound left a lasting impression, resonating with participants long after the event.

In 2024, the original team is expanding the second World Jaw Harp Music Festival, building on the first year's innovative design. Their vision is to amplify the festival’s impact, promoting and preserving the ancient jaw harp tradition, supporting related artistic creations and research, and encouraging international exchange.
